The Delaware Conference was originally part of the Philadelphia Conference and had its origin from the fact that the Philadelphia Conference had grown so large that it was inconvenient to hold the sessions of the Annual Conference in any Church (where close to 80 church congregations would have gathered). According to the history records it seemed, therefore to be the general opinion that the Philadelphia Conference should be divided into two organizations. In 1923 at the Philadelphia Annual Conference which was held that year at Mother Bethel A.M.E Church, a motion was called up and passed that gave birth to the new Delaware Annual Conference pending approval by the General Conference of the A.M.E. Church which was held the next year in Louisville, Kentucky where the motion was upheld and approved. Established officially in 1923, the Delaware Conference consist of two Districts, the Wilmington District and the Dover District (formerly named the Georgetown District). Today there are thirty-four (34) local church congregations that make up the Delaware Conference with a few churches located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, just north of New Castle County, Delaware.
